Teaching ESL with Vocabulary Exercises
Teaching ESL with vocabulary exercises is a very important part of teaching English as a second language. Students’ vocabulary is the very basis of their ability to express thoughts and ideas through the studied language. Teaching ESL with vocabulary exercises helps expand students’ vocabulary, make the knowledge of words more sensible and profound.
So what are these exercises that help an English learner do his best at remembering foreign words? As you might know, we memorize a word not only by its spelling but also by images that this particular word evokes in mind. So, the first and the essential vocabulary exercise of every English worksheet is naming words by pictures. For instance, if the topic of the worksheet is profession, a student should name the professions represented in the pictures. This proves to be very effective, though it’s not the only form of Teaching ESL with vocabulary exercises.
Another example of Teaching ESL with vocabulary exercises is a text with the gaps in the reading section. The student should fill in the gaps by relevant words, thus remembering them and, if there are words he didn’t know, expanding his/her vocabulary.
